How to Apply for A Residence Permit?

Foreigners, who do not have a valid residence permit and stay in Turkey more than their visa period, should apply for a student residence permit, shot-term residence permit, family residence permit or other types of permits through the e-ikamet system of the Directorate General of Migration Management before their visa expiration date, depending on the reason and duration of their stay.

Once you have completed your application via the e-ikamet system, the system will automatically give you an appointment date and time. You can choose the appointment date and time for application from different provinces.

After you have made an appointment, according to the type of residence permit application you have made until the date of appointment, you should prepare the required documents completely in a file and submit your passport or a passport substitute document on the appointment date.

It is also compulsory for foreigners to be covered by a valid medical insurance to obtain a residence permit.


How to Apply for a Residence Permit Extension?

Residence permits are valid for the period of time registered on the residence card. An application for extension of residence permit must be made from the beginning of the 60th day before the expiry date. The request for the extension of the residence permit is made through e-government system as in the first application.

If there is a change in the information entered in the system, such as your marital status, address information or passport number, the system will automatically give you an appointment date and time for a future date for İstanbul.

If you apply for a residence permit extension from a different province, you can decide the date and time of the appointment.

For residence permit extension applications, you must prepare the same documents requested from you in the first application.

It is compulsory to be covered by a valid medical insurance for the extension of the residence permit.

Applications for extension of residence permit can be extended for 3 years depending on the type of the residence permit.

What is a residence permit transition and how to apply?

There is a transition between residence permit types.

For example:

In case of obtaining a family residence permit for a foreigner who holds a student residence permit, a family residence permit is issued to the foreigner and as long as the foreigner continues to meet the student residence permit conditions, they will benefit from the same rights as the student residence permit.

In case of obtaining student residence permit for a foreigner who holds a family residence permit, the foreigner benefits from the rights of student residence permit while family residence permit continues.

The application for residence permit transition is made to the Migration Management via e-ikamet as with all residence permits. You will be given an appointment after you have applied to the Migration Management. You must complete your documents explaining the reasons for the application until the date of your appointment and submit your passport or a passport substitute document on the appointment date.
